Credit Union - Youth Accounts Mascot

A mascot design and ad campaign to promote Cheney Federal Credit Union’s ‘Penny Savers’ Youth Accounts. The revolves around the endearing and child-friendly character of Penny Pig. Always optimistic to introduce kids to smart saving, Penny brings a splash of color to a world often viewed with disinterest. Her bright red coat, studious spectacles and many talents have earned the appreciation of many CFCU Members, both young and old.

Process

Penny’s Origins

The concept of Penny Pig began with a ‘prize’ awarded to kids who signed up for CFCU Youth Accounts. This little bespectacled piggy bank, labelled with the custom Penny Savers wordmark, had so much appeal in the office and with members that the Youth Accounts ad campaign would be based on it.

Concept Sketches

The first drawings of Penny were done on simple notebook paper. The goal was to establish a personality and general look for the character, adapted from the piggy bank.

Translation to Vectors

The first complete illustrations of Penny were shaped out in Illustrator. By this time, the character was made to be a participant in local town events as a way to relate to CFCU members in the area. In some ways, this method allowed Penny to be an active and multifaceted character with ties to the community she was presented to.
